The GTA 6 Advert That Was Filmed Inside Red Dead Redemption 2
Image: Rockstar GamesTwenty six minutes into An Extended Look, a serene advert plays. Elk grazing beside wild hogs on a riverbank, golden light, red flowers, gentle water. It reads like a tourism spot for the Leonida backcountry, and most viewers let it wash past on the way to the next explosion.
It is not Leonida. It is Red Dead Redemption 2.
The find
Within a day of the premiere, Reddit user DangerousLeo, a Red Dead player with more than seven hundred hours logged, recognised the animal models and the terrain and went looking inside the older game. The search ended west of Annesburg, along the Lannahechee river, where the woods and the waterline match the advert shot for shot. The comparison images they shared line up almost exactly, and the match was reported by TheGamer within hours.
There are small differences, and they are the interesting kind. The GTA 6 version carries denser foliage, and there are rocks placed close to the camera that do not exist at the Red Dead location. In other words, the footage was not copied. It was shot on location inside the 2018 game and then dressed, the way a film crew would dress a real place for an advert.
Why Rockstar would do this
Two readings, and both can be true at once. The practical one is that Red Dead Redemption 2 remains one of the most beautiful nature simulations ever built, so if your fictional TV network needs pastoral stock footage, filming in a world you already own beats building a field from scratch. The playful one is that Rockstar loves threading its universes together, and putting one game inside the television of another is exactly their sense of humour.
It also pours a little more fuel on the long running same universe conversation. Trailer era analysis already spotted that the currency in GTA 6 appears to carry the faces of two presidents from Red Dead Redemption 2, Thaddeus Waxman and Franklin Hardin, under the legend United States of Paranoia. We treat that one as a strong community claim rather than a confirmed fact, and we will be checking it against our own frames of the cash handoff at 16:42. But an advert physically filmed inside the older game is not a resemblance. It is the older game, on the telly, in the new one.
Where it sits in the video
The advert block plays on the TV during the flat sequence and in a full screen cutaway from 7:44 to 7:50 on the public upload. The same ad break includes a spot for a medicine called Angstipan and a deeply unsettling burger mascot with a mouthful of square teeth, which is a sentence that could only ever be written about a Rockstar game.
Credit where it belongs. The location match was made and shared by DangerousLeo on Reddit and first reported by TheGamer. Our frames of the advert are drawn from the public video, and as always the timestamps above will take you straight to the moment.
